Major Events:
Their Importance for Destination Tourism

Destinations offer many local events for their residents. But what is the connection, and how are these events marketed to attract visitors?

Featured speaker Tom Kiely, CEO/President of Visit West Hollywood, will discuss how major events in West Hollywood, such as Gay Pride and Halloween, have put the city on the map. He will also explore how these events contribute to the local economy and quality of life for all to enjoy. Troy Masters, Publisher of LA Blade Magazine, an LGBTQ+ publication, will interview Tom about the importance and impacts of major destination events in West Hollywood.

TTMA expects the program, featuring Tom Kiely and Troy Masters, to be very engaging and informative for attendees. Additionally, TTMA is celebrating Pride, which to us is a celebration of everyone!

Thinking Inside the Box –
Update on the LA City Tourism Department and Expansion of the Convention Center

Do you know that the Los Angeles City Tourism Department (CTD) is responsible for tourism policy and strategic planning to increase LA’s competitiveness as a convention and tourism destination?

Do you know that the CTD oversees the LA Tourism and Convention Board for destination marketing, and ASM Global for the management of the Convention Center?

Do you know that the CTD reports directly to a board of five commissioners appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council?

Are you aware that the LA Convention Center is slated for a major expansion? Do you know what is being planned, and the status of the development?

To find out about all of this and what each of this means for our regional visitor economy, join TTMA to hear from Doane Liu, City Tourism Department Executive Director.  Also hear from Kim Weedmark, General Manager of the LA Convention Center for ASM, former vice president of special events at Universal Studios Hollywood, about managing the L.A.
